Solo Backpacking, Volunteering In Hostels

It might sound straightforward, but there are some unwritten guidelines to keep in mind when volunteering in hostels as a solo backpacker. I’ve picked up these tips through my own experiences, and now I’m here to share them with you. In this article, we’ll explore the dos and don’ts of volunteering in hostels to make sure you have a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Do:

1. Research the hostel beforehand: Before you arrive at the hostel, make sure to research the place thoroughly. This includes reading reviews from previous guests and volunteers and checking the hostel’s website for information on the duties required of volunteers.

2. Be open-minded: Volunteering in a hostel can be a great way to meet new people, but it can also be challenging if you’re not prepared to adapt to new cultures and ways of living. Be open-minded and willing to try new things, and you’ll have a much better experience.

3. Ask questions: If you’re unsure about something, don’t be afraid to ask. The hostel staff will be happy to answer your questions and help you get settled in.

4. Be flexible: Volunteering in a hostel often involves working in shifts, so it’s important to be flexible with your schedule. This means being willing to work in the morning or late at night, and being willing to help out with different tasks as needed.

5. Be friendly: As a volunteer, you’ll be representing the hostel to guests, so it’s important to be friendly and approachable. This means smiling, saying hello to guests, and being willing to chat with people from all over the world.

Don’t:

1. Overstay your welcome: Although it can be tempting to stay in one place for a long time, it’s important to remember that volunteering in hostels is meant to be a temporary arrangement. Make sure to respect the hostel’s policies and leave after the agreed-upon period of time.

2. Neglect your duties: As a volunteer, you have a responsibility to help the hostel run smoothly. This means showing up to work on time, completing your assigned tasks, and being respectful of the hostel’s rules and policies.

3. Be disrespectful to other volunteers: Volunteering in a hostel can be a great way to meet other travellers, but it’s important to remember that you’re all there to help the hostel, not just to have fun. Be respectful of other volunteers and their work, and avoid creating conflict or drama.

4. Expect luxury: Hostels are budget-friendly accommodations, and volunteering in one means you’ll be living in close quarters with other travellers. Don’t expect luxury accommodations or five-star service, and be prepared to live simply and modestly.

5. Be rude to guests: As a volunteer, it’s important to be polite and helpful at all times. Avoid being rude or dismissive to guests, even if they are demanding or difficult to deal with.

I hope this gives you some insight and food for thought before stepping into the hostel volunteer world. These certainly would’ve helped me all those years ago. It can be a fantastic experience, but it’s important to be prepared and know what to expect. By following these dos and don’ts, you’ll have a great time volunteering and making new friends from all over the world. Just remember to be open-minded, flexible, and friendly, and you’ll have a great time!
