Volunteering in Greece

Gap year, Solo Backpacking, Volunteer Stories, Volunteering In Hostels

My time volunteering at Matala Hostel in Crete was an unforgettable experience. I discovered the opportunity through Laulima Travels, a new hostel volunteer exchange platform, and I’m so glad I did. Apollo, Jason, and Hector, the owners, were the nicest and most welcoming people. They were always there to make sure I had everything I needed and to lend a helping hand.

The work at the hostel was not difficult. I mostly assisted with cleaning and tidying up the common areas and hanging out with travellers. Occasionally I would help on reception and at the bar but it was actually super fun helping keep the hostel running. Other than that there really wasn’t much to it.

The hostel itself was everything I needed it to be! It was a relief when I saw the place myself as it was my main concern before going. The rooms were large and comfortable, with enough space for everyone. Each room had its own balcony with beautiful views of the countryside. Comfortable seating, games, books, and other activities were also available in the common areas. The outdoor areas were ideal for relaxing in the sun or taking in the evening breeze. After a long day of exploring, the pool was the ideal place to cool off and relax.

What made it memorable were the people I met. It puts a smile on my face thinking back. At the hostel, every night was a pool party. There was always music playing, drinks flowing, and everyone was happy. It was the ideal way to cap off a day volunteering and exploring the town. I met so many wonderful people from all over the world. I made friends from Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and many other countries. Most nights we would just chill with drinks and chat shit, share travel stories and play games.

Apart from volunteering, some of my highlights were the food in Matala. There are decent local places to eat and drink. My favourites were the traditional Greek dishes as well as the fresh seafood. Matala’s beaches were good too. There are quite a few to choose from, each with its own distinct personality.

The town of Matala itself had a hippie vibe so you can imagine what it’s like walking around. Just loads of weird and wonderful things to see. There were also many local shops and markets. I enjoyed looking through the local crafts and souvenirs.

Getting involved in the local community was another highlight of mine. I had the opportunity to participate in local events and festivals, which increased my appreciation for Matala’s culture and traditions. I also had the opportunity to learn how to make traditional Greek dishes such as moussaka and tzatziki by taking a cooking class.

The town of Matala was awesome too, there was enough to see and do. From the ancient ruins of Knossos to the stunning beaches of Elafonisi. I also had the opportunity to visit Santorini, which was one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. The breathtaking scenery, cuisine, and rich history of the region made it an unforgettable experience.

In addition to all this, my time at Matala Hostel taught me some important life lessons. I learned how to be more self-sufficient and resourceful, as well as how to live in a community setting with others. I also developed a greater appreciation for the world and the people. It has left a big impression on me and has given me the courage to travel alone and seek out new experiences. It has given me a new outlook on life and opened my eyes to the beauty and richness of various cultures.

Leaving Matala Hostel after 3 amazing weeks of volunteering.

Overall, I would recommend volunteering at Matala Hostel to anyone volunteering for the first time.

If you want to meet new people, explore a new culture, or simply have fun, this is the perfect opportunity. Matala Hostel has something for everyone! I know it’s popular so my tip would be to jump on it as soon as possible especially when the peak season is coming. Peace!
